EVENTS HELD THROUGHOUT THE YEAR:
Fish Sale:
Here’s an opportunity to stock your pond. The District hosts a fish sale twice a year: Spring and Fall. A variety of fish are available including the Triploid Grass Carp, known for its biological weed control. The fish will be delivered to the SWCD office. The purchaser then needs to provide transportation from the office to the pond. (Large orders may be delivered directly to the pond. Call for more details). Suggested travel means for fish: coolers, 5 gallon buckets, garbage containers. When purchasing catfish, pond owners MUST provide your own pond water for transport. Order forms will be available online a few weeks before each sale.
Pond Seminar/Shocking: The Kendall and Grundy County SWCDs have partnered together to bring you two annual pond events conducted by Illinois Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist, Seth Love. Each spring, a Pond Seminar, and each fall, a Pond Shocking Demonstration, is held locally. The events provide information on pond maintenance/care, fish stocking rate, pond shocking, chemicals, feed and related questions.
Tree Sale: Each spring and fall, the District provides the public with the
opportunity to purchase a variety of plants. For your conservation needs, several species are available from potted trees, shrubs, evergreens, perennials and groundcover. Items are pre-ordered then delivered to the District office for pick-up. Order forms will be available online a few weeks before each sale.
Used Oil Pick-Up: Annually, the District hosts a Used Oil Pick-up on the Saturday before Father’s Day. The event encourages residents to to recycle any used oil they have collected throughout the year.
Natural Resource Tour: The Natural Resources Tour in an outdoor learning event open to 4th and 5th grade students in Kendall County. It is held at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville, IL. In 2022, this event took place on May 5th and May 12th. The tour accommodated 8 classrooms of students each day. During the tour, teachers led their students to 9 different stations located
throughout the site in which they learned about renewable and non-renewable resources, animals, trees, recycling, soil, watersheds, monarchs, agriculture, water conservation, bird migration, insect identification and safety, and nature. The presenters of these stations include educators from several agencies in and surrounding Kendall County.
Envirothon: Envirothon is a problem-solving natural resource competition for high school students in the United States and Canada. Working as a team of five, students learn to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to arrive at solutions to certain environmental issues in Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife and a current environmental issue.
